WA Battery Rebate

Adding a solar battery to your home has just become even more affordable, with the WA Government’s new WA Residential Battery Scheme.

The scheme is part of a $387 million program designed to increase the number of households installing a solar + battery system.

The WA Battery Rebate will make solar batteries more accessible and affordable for homes across Western Australia, and when combined with the National Battery Rebate, will help households save even more.

Is there a government solar battery rebate in WA?

The Western Australian government solar battery rebate scheme has been announced, with the WA Government offering rebates for residential batteries of up to $1,300* for Synergy customers and up to $3,800* for Horizon Power customers for 100,000 households. The scheme will start on 1 July 2025, with the size of the rebate dependent on the size of the battery.

What is the Residential Solar Battery Rebate?

The Residential Solar Battery Rebate is a government-funded scheme designed to encourage Western Australian residents to invest in solar battery storage at home so they can save on the upfront costs of a battery and their future energy bills.

How much is the solar battery rebate?

The government solar battery rebate will offer 100,000 households up to $1,300* for Synergy customers and up to $3,800* for Horizon Power customers. Eligible households will also be able to access no-interest loans from $2000 up to $10,000* to purchase either a battery or a solar + battery system for their home.

The rebates will not be means-tested, meaning they can be accessed regardless of income. The loans, which are aimed at lower to middle-income earners, will be available for homes with a combined annual income of less than $210,000.

When is the solar battery rebate due to start?

The government solar battery rebate is due to begin on or before 1st July 2025. The WA Government has explained it could be rolled out in multiple rounds, through a third-party provider with relevant experience, who will manage applications, compliance and disbursement.

How long will the scheme last?

It’s not clear yet how long the scheme will last and when the 100,000 battery rebates will be fully allocated, although the interest-free loans, which can be used to install either battery-only systems or solar + battery packages, are expected to have an interest-free repayment period of up to ten years.

What are the requirements for the scheme?

This is a wide-ranging scheme designed to benefit the majority of households; helping them save thousands and increasing their energy independence while providing cost-of-living relief. There are, however, a few criteria for application. These criteria will be further developed as the launch date for the scheme approaches.

Battery system requirements

Batteries will need to be connected to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Plico has WA's only independent accredited VPP under the rebate program. With extensive experience in solar batteries and VPPs, we can help you access the battery rebates, earn VPP rewards and unlock future savings. You can join the Plico VPP if you already have a solar battery or are having one installed by another solar provider. If you purchase a Plico solar battery, your system is automatically connected to our VPP.

In order to qualify for the rebate, a battery system must be either new, additional or a replacement battery, with a minimum 5 kWh storage capacity and maximum 10 kWh storage capacity (although larger systems can be installed with the rebate capped at 10 kWh). The National Battery Rebate provides a discount for systems up to 50 kWh.

Retailer and installer requirements

Solar battery retailers and installers must have a Western Australian business address. They must also demonstrate integrity, with clear, transparent pricing to be published before each round of rebates.

They also need to demonstrate they have the capacity to provide and install approved solar panel + battery systems, as well as meet technical and safety standards. Battery suppliers and installers have not yet been selected for the program.

As WA’s trusted local solar battery provider, Plico is well-positioned to help West Aussie households access the scheme with a cutting-edge solar battery system. Plico is the only provider in WA who can get you the solar + battery system you've always wanted, plus an independent VPP that unlocks access to the rebates and ongoing rewards.

Am I eligible for a solar battery rebate?

Now we know which systems are eligible for the solar battery rebate; what about who can apply?

Eligibility criteria for applicants

Anyone with a residential property in Western Australia with a Synergy or Horizon Power account is eligible to apply, including home businesses. Properties owned by the State, Federal or Local Government are not eligible for the program, and financial institutions, telcos, and mining and resource companies are also ineligible.

The criteria for the means-tested no-interest loans is households with a combined annual income of less than $210,000. Landlords who can demonstrate a long-term tenancy agreement may be eligible for a loan rebate, however rebates and loans will be limited to one per property connection.

How do I calculate my rebate amount?

The size of your rebate amount will be determined by the size of your battery. The battery rebate for Synergy customers will be $130 per kilowatt hour (kWh) for up to 10 kWh of battery capacity. Horizon Power customers will be eligible for rebates of $380 per kWh for up to 10 kWh of battery capacity. Households can opt for a larger battery and access national rebates; however, the WA rebate will be capped at 10 kWh.

For further information about the rebate, keep an eye on the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety as they continue to update their plans.

*Rebate subject to unconfirmed details. Applications for WA Government rebates and loans are not yet open and battery suppliers or installers have not been selected. Batteries installed before the commencement of the WA Battery Rebate will not be eligible.
