Stacking Federal & WA State Rebates
Solar has been all over the news, with both the National Government and state governments offering rebates to make installing a solar and battery system in your home even easier. While there have been some changes to the initial WA solar battery rebate amounts announced, Plico is on hand to help.
As WA’s trusted local solar battery provider and the state’s only independent VPP provider approved for the WA Battery Rebate, we can guide you through the rebates to make sure you get the maximum benefits available.

Rebate changes at a glance
Some changes have been made to the WA Battery Rebate since it was first announced before the state election in March 2025. The main change is a reduction in the value of the rebate on offer. There have also been some unexpected changes to the requirements under the scheme. The good news from these changes, however, is that the rebates are now available for more households.
There’s also been greater clarity around the interest-free loans, and the type of solar + battery systems eligible for savings.
WA Battery Rebate 2025 reduced
While the WA rebate amounts have been reduced to $1,300 for Synergy customers and $3,800 for Horizon customers for up to 10 kWh of battery capacity, these can be stacked with the federal rebate.
The combined totals still deliver close to the pledged initially amounts of $5,000 for Synergy customers and $7,500 for Horizon customers when both rebates are claimed together, offering excellent value for those looking to purchase a solar battery.
Changes to battery retrofit requirements in WA
Battery upgrades - where additional batteries are installed to increase capacity - are eligible for the National Battery Rebate.
However, eligibility for the WA Battery Rebate depends on whether your existing solar system meets new remote management requirements set by Synergy.
If you are upgrading an AC-coupled battery to an existing solar inverter, many solar providers, including Plico, are unable to offer the WA rebate or interest-free loan. This is because we cannot upgrade your existing solar inverter to meet these new requirements.
If you have an existing solar system, you can choose to access the National rebate only (which still offers excellent value), upgrade to a full solar + battery system or choose a DC-coupled battery full system retrofit that meets the new ‘whole of site compliance’ requirements.
Stacking rebates is possible in all states
That’s right, you can stack your way to a brighter deal by combining the Australian Government Cheaper Home Batteries Program rebate with the state rebate being offered by the WA Government.
This means your total rebate potential is still close to $5,000 for Synergy customers and $7,500 for Horizon customers in 2025.
VPP connection now required in WA
If you want to claim a rebate on your solar battery, you will need to connect it to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) so that the solar power you generate can contribute to the stability of the grid.
This is no problem for Plico customers - we have the largest independent VPP in WA, and all of our batteries are connected to our VPP. Plus, Plico is the only independent VPP provider approved for the WA Battery Rebate, so you can join our VPP even if you purchase a battery through another provider.
Plico offers an automatic VPP connection
We’re the most experienced VPP in the state, with over 3,000 members, and we’re growing daily. Joining Plico’s VPP offers you 3 x your energy cost (min 97c/kWh) for your energy sent from your battery to the grid during a VPP event. If you purchase a solar battery through Plico, you’ll also receive a discount for joining our VPP.
Interest-free loans
The $10,000 interest-free loans are available to WA households earning less than $210,000 a year to purchase solar + battery or battery-only systems.
The loans can be repaid over 10 years.
If you don’t qualify for the interest-free loan, you can sign up for a low-interest finance plan with Plico, with simple weekly instalments over your chosen time period of up to 12 years.
Stacking rebates: Federal + State = better value for West Aussies
As we mentioned above, the federal rebate and the state rebate are complementary and completely stackable, meaning you can access both and save thousands on a solar battery.
How to stack rebates
Together, the rebates can save you thousands on the cost of a solar battery, making clean energy more affordable and accessible for more West Aussies. Here’s how you can benefit:
Research eligibility
Do your research to ensure you are eligible for both rebates. There’s no means testing for either program (except for the interest-free loan), but you must own the property where the system is being installed.
Your battery must also be connected to a VPP in WA (or VPP-ready for the National rebate), and both the battery and inverter must be on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved list and eligibility list for the WA Battery Rebate. The rebates cannot be applied retrospectively.
Choose an accredited installer
Make sure you choose an accredited installer for the WA rebate, who understands how the rebates work. At Plico, we can guide you through the application process as part of your install.
As the only independent VPP provider approved for the WA Battery Rebate,we understand the rebates inside and out. Our innovative payment model also makes solar + battery affordable, eliminating big upfront costs. You can choose to pay your clean energy system off over time or purchase upfront.
Installation timing
To make the most of the National Battery Rebate, you’ll want to have your system installed in 2025, before the rebate value reduces from 1 January 2026. With a surge in demand for batteries and many installers already working through a backlog of installations, some customers will likely have to wait until 2026 to have their system installed. Ask your provider when your installation is expected and if it gets delayed, whether they can honour the 2025 battery pricing.
If you are starting your journey now, however, don’t worry, the 2026 national rebate still offers fantastic values, and the WA rebate remains at up to $1300.
Keep all your documentation
In this ever-changing field, it’s crucial that you keep all your documentation together. Keep records of all the applications, approvals and any receipts to streamline your process and make sure your switch to solar + battery is as smooth as possible.
