Solar rebates in Canberra
Installing solar in the ACT can be more affordable than many homeowners realise.
Thanks to federal incentives and ACT Government support programs, eligible households can significantly reduce the upfront cost of going solar. Whether you're looking to lower your electricity bills, reduce your reliance on the grid, or take a step towards a more sustainable home, these programs can help make the transition easier. Here's a breakdown of the solar incentives currently available and who may be eligible to apply.
Federal Solar Rebate (STCs)
The Federal Solar Rebate is available to ACT homeowners through the Australian Government's Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
Rather than receiving cashback, eligible households receive Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which are typically applied as an upfront discount on their solar installation. This can reduce the cost of a new solar system by thousands of dollars.
Eligibility: Most ACT homeowners are eligible when installing an approved solar system through an SAA-accredited installer. The solar panels and inverter must also meet program requirements.
Home Energy Support Program (Solar)
The Home Energy Support Program provides additional assistance for eligible ACT households looking to install rooftop solar. The program is designed to help lower-income households reduce their energy bills and transition to cleaner energy.
Eligibility: This support is generally available to eligible concession card holders who own and live in their ACT home. Applicants must meet the program's requirements and use approved products and installers.
Sustainable Household Scheme (Solar Finance)
The ACT Government's Sustainable Household Scheme helps residents access low-interest finance for approved energy upgrades, including solar installations. Eligible households can access loans to help spread the upfront cost over time.
Eligibility: Homeowners in the ACT may be eligible if they meet the lender's credit assessment criteria and use a participating supplier within the scheme.
Battery rebates in Canberra
If you're considering solar panels or battery storage in the ACT, there are several incentives available that can help reduce upfront costs.
From federal rebates to low-interest government-backed finance, ACT residents have access to some of Australia's strongest clean energy support programs. Here's a breakdown of the battery incentives currently available and who may be eligible to apply.
Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program
The Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program helps reduce the cost of installing an eligible home battery by providing an upfront discount. The incentive is available across Australia and can significantly lower the cost of battery storage for ACT households.
Eligibility: Homeowners must install an eligible battery system using an SAA-accredited installer. The battery must meet the requirements of the program at the time of installation.
Home Energy Support Program (Battery Assistance)
Eligible ACT households may also receive support towards battery storage through the Home Energy Support Program. For qualifying residents, this can be one of the most valuable battery incentives available in the ACT.
Eligibility: The program is generally available to eligible concession card holders who own and occupy their home in the ACT. Additional program requirements may apply.
Sustainable Household Scheme (Battery Finance)
The Sustainable Household Scheme can also be used to help finance the installation of a home battery. The program provides low-interest loans, allowing homeowners to spread the cost of battery storage over a longer period.
Eligibility: ACT homeowners may qualify if they meet the lender's requirements and purchase their battery through an approved provider participating in the scheme.

How much will I save?
Your exact savings will depend on the size of your system, how much energy you use and a few other factors, like roof orientation and your current electricity provider’s tariffs. But the sunshine will definitely score you more energy savings. Use our savings calculator to find out how much you might be able to save with a Plico system.

How much energy do you use? Pick the option closest to your average monthly electricity bill, or choose Actual to enter your own figure.
The amount of savings is based on electricity consumption only, the daily supply charge has not been factored in. The amount of savings does not factor in the costs of the system, regardless of whether it's paid upfront or on a credit contract. The amount of the annual bill savings factors in feed in tariff amounts for any kilowatt-hours exported back to the grid, it does not factor in any export limiting of the inverter. For monthly bills between $100 and $130 amounts, the annual savings amount is greater than the annual bill amount, due to feed in tariff credits for amounts exported back to the grid.
What size solar system do I need?
We also factor in your roof orientation, how much space you have and how much sunlight you’re exposed to.
The average residential solar system in Australia is 9.3 kW, while in the ACT the average is 11 kW. With strong solar conditions and a growing focus on energy independence, many ACT homeowners are choosing larger systems to maximise their savings and battery benefits.
We have prepared a guideline to give you some indication of what size solar system might suit your needs. For a tailored assessment of what would best suit you, why not reach out to our switched-on team?

Solar batteries in Canberra FAQs
-
Is it worth getting a solar battery if you live in Canberra?
Yes, for many Canberra households a solar battery can be well worth it, especially if you already have solar or are planning to install it.
Canberra gets plenty of sunshine, so solar systems often generate more power than a home uses during the day.
Rather than sending excess solar to the grid for a relatively low feed-in tariff, a battery lets you use that energy at night when electricity is typically more expensive. -
What size battery is best for Canberra homes?
The battery size will depend on your household's energy use and solar system size. A battery that is too small or too large can reduce the value you get from it.A 10 kWh battery is typically a good fit for the average Canberra family home, while larger households or those with an EV or pool may benefit from 15–30 kWh of storage. With battery rebates now available, many ACT homes are choosing to future-proof their energy with a larger-sized battery.
