Solar batteries are more affordable than ever in WA thanks to the WA interest-free battery loan and rebates available. These incentives are helping everyday Aussies to cut cost of living pressure by reducing power bills and ongoing running costs. 

As part of the WA Residential Battery Scheme, eligible homes can access an interest-free loan of up to $10,000, to be paid back over 10 years.

The loan can be stacked with the WA Battery Rebate of up to $1,300, PLUS national solar and battery rebates.

Eligible WA households can access a no-interest loan of up to $10,000 for solar and battery, battery only or battery upgrades. The loan is paid back over 10 years with zero interest charged during that time. 

WA homes accessing the loan can use their bill savings to pay back the loan and have savings left in their pocket. Combined with the loan is the WA Battery Rebate of up to $1,300 for Synergy customers.

Am I eligible for the WA interest-free loan?

The WA interest-free battery loan is means-tested. To be eligible for the loan, you must have a combined income of less than $210,000 a year. 

You also need to be a Synergy or Horizon Power customer; have an approved battery system installed by an approved vendor; and have it connected to an approved Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

Plico has the only independent VPP approved for the WA interest-free loan, is an approved WA Residential Battery Scheme vendor and only installs Clean Energy Council approved solar and battery systems. 

What can I use the no-interest loan for?

The WA interest-free loan is designed to accelerate the uptake of solar batteries in WA homes. 

To qualify for the loan (and state battery rebate), a battery system must be either new, additional or a replacement battery, with a minimum 5 kWh storage capacity and maximum 10 kWh storage capacity (although larger systems can be installed with the rebate capped at 10 kWh).

The loan can be used for combined solar, inverter and battery systems. 

The rebate and loan can be accessed once per property. There are 100,00 rebates available and are expected to be exhausted by 2027.

To access the WA Battery Interest-free Loan and Rebate, batteries must be connected to an accredited Virtual Power Plant. As WA's only accredited independent VPP provider, we pay you more for your energy, so you're always better off. You receive 3x your energy costs (tariff) for energy exported from your battery to the grid during a VPP event. This is a minimum payment of 99c/kWh (unit).

What is the WA Battery Rebate?

The WA Residential Battery Scheme aims to make solar batteries more affordable for WA families. It's set to be the most generous battery rebate in Australia and means you could have the battery you've always wanted, for a fraction of the cost.

The $387 million package includes one-off rebates of up to $1300* for Synergy customers and up to $3800* for Horizon customers. 

The rebate allows for a minimum battery size of 5 kWh up to 10 kWh and includes new, additional and replacement solar batteries*. The rebate will be applied at $130 per kilowatt hour (kWh) for Synergy customers.

To be eligible, batteries must be connected to a Virtual Power Plant and meet Australian and local grid standards. Plico has the only independent VPP approved for the WA rebate.

What is the National Battery Rebate?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is making solar batteries more affordable for Aussie households. The program has been so popular that the Australian Government is investing a further $5 billion and shifting the level of support so more homes can benefit. The rebate will reduce more frequently, and the allocation will be tiered based on battery size. The soon-to-be $7.2 billion program will reduce the cost of a typical solar battery by around 30 per cent*.

Here's how the rebates are being applied from May 2026:

  • First 0 kWh to 14 kWh will receive 100% of the rebate

  • Every kWh greater than 14 and up to 28 will receive 60% of the rebate

  • Every kWh greater than 28 and up to 50 will receive 15% of the rebate

These changes mean that more Aussie households can access an affordable solar battery and for longer, which is great news for clean energy!

The National Battery Rebate can be stacked with the WA Battery Rebate to help WA households save even more.

What solar rebates are available in WA? 

The solar rebates in Western Australia vary based on factors such as the size of the system you install and where you live. This impacts the number of STCs you’re eligible for (and therefore the total amount). Read this article how solar rebates work in WA to find out exactly how STCs are calculated. If you’re not up to speed on STCs then don’t worry – all STCs are handled by Plico and the credit is factored into your low weekly instalment.  All you have to do is, on the day of installation, sign your STCs over to the local installer and we will do everything else from there. 

In Australia, the government solar rebate is set to conclude by 2030, after which rebates will be unavailable.
