What direction is best for solar to face?

North-facing solar panels will get the most sun year-round, which is great news for the sun-drenched South West of WA. However, if you have an east-west roof alignment, you can still harness most of the sun’s energy from dawn to dusk. There are a few other factors to consider, though, such as making sure that your panels aren’t shaded or blocked by trees or other buildings. When it comes to panel positioning, it’s also worth checking the steepness of the roof or slope where the panels will be placed to ensure your solar takes maximum advantage of the South West sun.

How much does a solar system cost?

At Plico, we understand that the cost of heating and cooling your house has gone through the roof. While a solar system is a great investment, at Plico we have different payment options available to make it worthwhile to make the switch to solar.

We offer a low weekly instalment, with no big upfront installation costs. And because we’re genuinely committed to saving you money, we’ll come out and inspect your home free of charge to check and make sure that your place is suitable for one of our solar systems. If we don’t believe our system is going to save you money, we’ll say so.

It’s hard for us to answer this without taking a look at your home and energy bills, which is why we commit to a free site visit. The bright spot is that although WA’s South West catches a little less sun than further north, we have systems available that make the most of the available sunshine. Why not add energy independence and freedom from blackouts into that laidback South West lifestyle? WA comes out front as the sunshine state. Australia’s average residential solar system is 9.3kW, however in WA, it’s 8.63kW because of how much sunlight we receive.

South West Solar FAQs

Is it worth getting a solar battery if you live in Bunbury and the South West?

It’s definitely worth getting a solar battery if you live in Bunbury or the South West. Bunbury has around eight hours of sunshine on average every day, which makes it the perfect place for a solar battery system. While it might not have quite as much sunlight as Perth, the South West is in the Southern Sub Tropics, which means its hot, dry climate is perfect for solar power generation. Facing solar panels to the north to capture maximum sunlight and investing in a battery so that you can store the surplus of energy production is the best way to make the most of the brilliant sunshine in the South West and keep your energy bills low.

What size battery is best for Bunbury homes?

The average West Australian household uses 16 kWh of electricity per day, so one of our most popular configurations is a 10 kWh battery, with an 8 kW solar panel system. This set-up should suit a home in Bunbury or the South West perfectly, to make the most of the naturally sunny weather. We offer a no-obligation site visit so that we can talk through how and when you use your energy, and how you can maximise solar storage. We’ll inspect your home to work out how many solar panels and what battery size best suits your needs.

How much will solar save me?

Solar savings are dependent on individual circumstances. Factors that influence your savings are:

  • How high your energy usage is.
  • What time of day you use the majority of your power.
  • The number of residents in your home.
  • Whether you have battery storage.

Without solar battery storage, when the sun goes down, you'll be paying for your energy off the grid. This makes little sense as you've invested money in your solar system and want to maximise the work it does for you. A solar battery is the key to getting greater energy independence – generate, store and use your energy how you want to.

Plico is different to other solar companies in our payment method. Members pay just one low weekly fee, with no big upfront costs. This means that it doesn’t take years to recoup your return on investment; you can start saving from day one.

How to maximise your solar savings

There are a number of ways to maximise your savings, both by monitoring and managing your power usage, and also maximising the solar panels themselves through the addition of a solar battery.

Running appliances like dishwashers and washing machines during the day will help you make the most of your solar energy, as will charging appliances during the day for use at night. You can also maximise your home itself by ensuring it is well insulated and by adding a solar battery to store excess solar energy.

Switching to a time-of-day electricity tariff and joining a Virtual Power Plant will  get you even more value out of your solar investment. Keeping your solar panels clean and monitoring their performance will also ensure your panels last longer.

How much does solar save you annually?

The annual total of your solar savings depends on how much your electrical bills are. The larger your bills, the greater your savings. However, Australian energy bills have been consistently rising, to the point where most households can expect to save a considerable amount annually from switching to solar power. Use our solar savings calculator to find out how much you could save!
